Sunset Dar es Salaam

The city of Stone Town is captivating as much for its history as for its architecture and location. As the former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate, it was the flourishing centre of the spice trade as well as the slave trade in the 19th century and holds many reminders of the city's dark past. Its architecture, mostly dating back to the 19th century, reflects the diverse influences underlying the Swahili culture, with a unique mixture of Moorish, Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements.

Dar es Salaam Harbour Side

Sea Cliff Hotel is located just 5km from Dar es Salaam city centre and guests can reach the sites of the city as well as enjoy easy access to the popular bars and restaurants of the peninsula.

Many people overlook Dar es Salaam when visiting Tanzania but any time spent exploring the city will be time well spent. It is Tanzania’s largest and most important city for both business and government and is a bustling metropolis with a colourful history and melting pot of cultures.

There are many things to see and do including visiting the many markets, national museum and historical buildings like St Joseph's church that you can see in the photo. We've put together a guide for our guests with 50 Things to See and Do in Dar so be sure to ask for a copy when you arrive!

Fisherman on Dhow Boat

Come wind, rain or shine, you'll see the fisherman hard at work bringing in one of the many fish that live in the waters right next to our hotel. Most days, you'll see them preparing their nets and diving to catch octopus just a few metres from the edge of our cliff.

If you get chance, a visit to the Kivukoni fish market comes recommended. It may not smell the best but it is an incredible sight to see the fisherman bringing in their catch and putting it out to auction as well as the many stalls selling the most vibrant aray of fish and seafood.

Boy Fishing On South Beach

The coastline North and South of Dar es Salaam is often overlooked for the islands off the coast. However, within 30 mins (depending on traffic) you'll find white sands and the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

One of the most popular beaches is South Beach located just over the Kigamboni ferry. From here, there are many beaches down the coastline where, in season, you might be lucky enough to see the miraculous event of turtle hatching.
